Whether or not to wear a seat belt is the topic of debates across the nation. Many people feel that seat belts are just too uncomfortable and they don’t see the need to wear them because they wrinkle their clothes or cause their shoulder area to hurt. These people don’t realize how much danger they are putting themselves in simply because of a comfort issue. Seat belts aren’t necessarily made to be comfortable or a beautiful addition to the expensive ensemble you’re wearing, they were constructed to be the safest possible for everyone in the car, whatever size they are.
These people that object to the laws regarding seat belts and don’t see the necessity of them probably haven’t heard the statistics stating that the highest rate of survival due to wearing a seat belt was 96.3% of those people involved in an auto accident in Washington and 10 other states and the lowest percentage was 63.5% in New Hampshire. Along with saving many lives, wearing seat belts when you’re involved in an accident can actually save you money on your Continental auto insurance premiums. Also, in some states it is the law that you are always buckled up along with all of your passengers and if not you could get a ticket costing a lot of money in fines.
It is important to make sure that you know how to use your seat belt properly. If you do not have it on correctly it probably won’t be as effective in keeping you safe. The positioning of the straps is where people usually go wrong. It may seem hard to adjust the belts to fit your size especially if someone with a completely different body type used it last. Just remember that the shoulder belt should be sitting across your collarbone and chest and be snug, while the lap belt should be low and close fitting across your pelvis, but never across your stomach area. Some people that have air bags think that they don’t need to wear seat belts but that is to the contrary, air bags do not replace the seat belt. This is because the air bag only works correctly if you are belted into your seat in the proper position.
Children who have reached a certain age, height and weight can be buckled into the regular car seat belts. But any child under the recommended regulations should always be in some sort of booster seat facing forward. Of course, a baby should be in the proper size car seat and facing toward the rear of your vehicle. Overall, advice that auto insurance discounters would give to anyone is to make sure to have a sufficient amount of protection and make sure to be as safe as possible on the road and that means wearing seat belts at all times.
