What Should You Look for in a Chinchilla Cage?
You must be able to provide an environment which is conducive to the chinchilla surviving and that means providing an environment which is as close to the animals native habitat as possible. You should also try and make the chinchilla feel as comfortable as possible by not only making the room in which the chinchilla is going to stay reasonably resembling the native environment of the chinchilla, but you should also make sure that the chinchilla cage that you purchase is the correct one for your new pet. So, what type of chinchilla cages should you be purchasing for your chinchilla?
Chinchillas like to climb and jump, it is known for a chinchilla to jump up to 5 feet into the air, they are a very active animal and so they need the room in which to move around fairly lively. The bigger the cage that you can provide for your new chinchilla the better your chinchilla will be. The ideal cage, if you have the room for it, is a cage which is measured in feet 6 x 6 x 3. This size of chinchilla cage is going to give your chinchilla a lot of room so that it will be able to move around as much as it likes. There are many different types of Chinchilla cages that you can purchase in this size also; one of the specific types of cages is one with plenty of different levels. Each level has a ramp that gives the chinchilla access to the next level.
The ideal Chinchilla cages are made from only one or two types of material and as we go you will understand why. The ideal material for a chinchilla cage to be built from is wire mesh. Many people think that they can put a chinchilla into a glass cage or a plastic cage, this is just not so. Chinchilla’s come from a very dry and cool atmosphere, they need to have a good temperature, between 60 and 70°F, and they also need to have the correct humidity. A plastic chinchilla cage or a glass chinchilla cage is just not going to give the chinchilla the necessary ventilation. A cage for a chinchilla made out of wood is also not a good idea. This is because the chinchilla can chew through the wooden bars very quickly. If you are purchasing a wire mesh cage, make sure that the wire is not coated in plastic as the chinchilla may chew the plastic off.
