A brief introduction to Irish forestry

Looking at Irish forestry today, anybody would assume that the trees that are planted are native species to the land. The predominant tree that is growing on Irish soil today is the Sitka Spruce and this tree is a native of North America, not of Ireland. But, the Spruce is a very versatile tree that basically allows the forest grower in Ireland to plant the tree on plots of land which would otherwise not be suitable for a forest. The different soils that the Spruce can grow on include obviously the best soils that are available. The Spruce can also grow on Irish forestry sites that are very boggy, and there is a lot of peat bog in the west of Ireland. And the Spruce is hardy enough to be able to with planned a lot of the battering that it will have to take if it is planted along the west coast because of the fierce winds that can blow here and the frequent storms during the winter.

Some of the native trees that used to be part of the habitat of the forestry in Ireland included the Scots Pine, the Blackthorn, the Mountain Ash, and many different types of Oak tree. Most of these species have been reintroduced into Ireland over the previous number of years. But these trees have not been reintroduced in any large way. In the main, the deciduous trees are added as a border to the coniferous forest. There are very few plots of land that are planted entirely with deciduous trees. And, over the centuries, what was once an island of natural forestry has been gradually removed to make way for agriculture and building until there is very little left. Now, there is a substantial effort to try and increase the amount of forestry in Ireland. This is not only for commercial purposes, but it will also help Ireland to remove some of the for carbon dioxide emissions that we produce, and it will also help to reduce the overall environmental taxes that are otherwise going to burden the struggling economy.  In order to assess the value of a forest, inspection paths need to be to provide forest access. This is normally done after a forest reaches 14 years of age.
