Do Hair Loss Shampoos Regrow Hair

This is a question that is heard a lot today as more and more hair loss shampoos come on the market. Many of these hair care products make all kinds of claims and have all kinds of special ingredients. One even has emu oil which is supposed to foster hair growth for some reason that no one can really explain. The fact of the matter is most shampoos really won’t have a whole lot of effect on your baldness because they don’t really have any ingredient that actually deals with the root cause of the problem.

When a man is suffering from male pattern baldness he has a medical condition known as Androgenic Alopecia. This problem is genetic based with the genes being passed from the mother’s or the father’s blood line. When a man suffers pattern baldness his body is actually attacking his own hair. There is a substance in the body called DHT which is a metabolite of the male hormone testosterone. This DHT actually bonds with receptors on the hair follicles and slowly changes their growth patterns. A normal hair follicle will grow for several months then go dormant for a few and then grow again. When the DHT attacks the hair follicles this shortens the growth stage with each successive pattern of growth. Eventually, the hair follicle has not produced enough keratin, the hair shaft material, and the shaft becomes too weak to support itself. It breaks off and falls out of the scalp but there is no replacement because that particular follicle can no longer produce.

If you are looking for a shampoo for hair loss then you need to know there are only a couple of treatments that actually deal with this root problem and only one of them is topical (applied to the scalp). Minoxidil, the active ingredient in the product Rogaine, is the only topical agent that has been approved by the FDA. If you are trying to treat hair loss from the outside then this is the substance that must be present in whatever product you are using.
