We Love Our Teddy Bears

People love to collect things.  Some more than others, but most people have something that they collect.  One of the most popular areas of collecting is dolls and teddy bears.  This may be due to the fact that we sometimes get so attached to these items when we are very young children.

The teddy bear has become a part of not only American culture, but societies around the globe.  What started out as a tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt, has grown into a toy that almost every child owns at some point.  The story goes that President Roosevelt was presented with the opportunity to shoot a captive bear as part of a publicity photo opportunity.  He refused to shoot the helpless bear.  A cartoon was drawn commemorating the episode and the story became news.  Rose and Morris Michtom of Brooklyn, New York got the idea to design a toy bear based on the episode, and the rest is history.

People collect all types of bears.  There are some folks who only concentrate on collecting one particular brand.  Bing and Steiff are two of the most popular brand name bears.  Both have been around since the early 1900s and can be quite valuable.  Others prefer to collect more modern variations of the teddy bear.  There are even specialty stores that allow children to design and build their own teddy bear.  Entire parties for children are held at these establishments.  This area of teddy bear collecting has grown so quickly that there is actually a significant market for used Build a Bear clothes.

If you are looking for a wonderful and original gift idea, a giant teddy bear for the one you love is something that will not soon be forgotten.  These can be set up in rocking chairs and become part of a room’s decor.  Just be sure that the person you give the bear to is willing to donate the space needed!

Teddy bears are a wonderful gift for children and adults alike.  They remind us of an innocent time and bring a smile to our faces.  The teddy bear will most likely remain a part of our culture for a long time to come.
