The Prospect Of A Synthetic Grass Golf Course
Personally, I think synthetic grass golf courses were always bound to happen and although many a golfer would be cringing at the thought, the truth is they have been playing on an artificially created surface to start with. The way that the grass on a golf course is so carefully manicured prompts questions over just how natural it might actually be.
Thousands of gallons of water is pumped into it to keep it green, the grass is cut a number of times per week to keep the fairways short and playable and the greens rolling fast and true. Chemicals are used to ensure the grass is not attacked by beetles and other pests and fertilizers are added to ensure the grass keeps growing. All of these artificial additions are used to force the grass to behave in a certain way for the benefit of the golfers who hack their way through it.
The enormous amount of work that goes into a top quality golf course is staggering and the costs that are associated are equally so. Effectively it is a battle between the greenkeepers and the natural inclination of grass to run rampant through all of that open space.
Is it any wonder that the technology of synthetic grass is beginning to catch up so that it could possibly be used as the surface for an entire golf course. There are a number of studies that are being conducted to ensure that synthetic grass will perform the same way as real grass does. These include the height of the grass, the density of the grass, the way the ball reacts to landing and rolling and how the synthetic grass reacts to the golfing equipment.
As pointed out earlier, the grass on a golf course can barely be acknowledged as natural apart from the fact that it is living. The only question will be how playing on a synthetic surface will affect the comfort of the players. This remains to be seen.
