Does TV Bring You Real Happiness?

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t have a TV. I’m sure there are quite a few about but I don’t know of anyone personally. If I did, I’d ask them whether they are truly happier for not having one.

I used to watch a lot of TV especially if I’d had a bad day at work. In the evenings I’d spend three or four hours in front of it – maybe more. I love a good TV show or a movie but in the end the TV habit got me watching shows I had no real interest in just to fill the time.

Evening viewing became something of a ritual that also came to include ritual eating. I associated the evening TV routine with snacking. Yes I got enjoyment out of it but it didn’t last long. The snack calories in the evening caused me to gain weight.

I got to the point where I started to feel unhappy because firstly I was wasting my time watching trash TV and secondly, I was getting fat. I didn’t like what I was becoming, I started to feel depressed and so I did something about it.

I decided to break the habit and do something else instead. I chose to start running. Not seriously – just a mile every other evening. On the evenings I don’t run I spend the time writing to my blog.

Breaking a bad habit or a negative state of mind is an excellent way to improve your happiness, and the great thing is, I still watch TV, I’m just much more selective about it. Do I still snack while watching? Of course! But not nearly so much as I used to.

The weight has dropped off, I still get to eat the things I like and I feel much fitter.

I don’t own a nice Plasma TV with surround sound or anything like that, but I can say that TV does bring me real happiness – but only because I’ve adopted a balanced attitude towards it.
