Choosing a Cooking Thermometer
A cooking thermometer that utilizes an oven thermometer probe is a useful gadget for determining the proper temperature of foodstuffs for consumption. It is used in restaurants on a regular basis for the safety of patrons. For instance, chicken must reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees before being safe to ingest. Any discerning cook would want an accurate oven thermometer, but there is a trade-off between the low price of a simple probe and the preciseness of a digital thermometer, which is more expensive.
In its simplest form, the typical oven thermometer is a small metal probe with a round attached temperature reader on top. The metal part of the probe is placed at the center of the food item, without coming in contact with the serving dish. Coming in contact with the dish could yield an incorrect reading, or damage the probe. Within moments, a reading is returned. The advent of digital oven thermometers has allowed cooks to be alerted with an alarm the instant food in the oven has reached a desired temperature. Reaching the proper internal temperature is especially important for meat products, since a variance of a few degrees could mean the difference between a succulent meal and a dry, unappetizing one.
The only drawback to digital thermometers is that the oven thermometer probe often malfunctions, or rather the wire that connects the probe to the digital readout gets damaged over time in the oven door, causing incorrect readings or no reading at all. Most digital thermometers do not sell the probe attachments separately, which means that the entire digital thermometer will need to be replaced when it fails. On the bright side, the average digital thermometer only costs about $20 or less and shouldn’t need to be replaced more than once every few years. If you cook often then you should consider purchasing a thermometer.
